Dear Students,

This note is mainly for the AP Psych students. On the other hand, you are all very welcome to take part in this exercise.

Bellow, you will find the “AP Psych Summer Reading” document, explaining the expectations.

Have a great summer and see you in September!

TED Talks

Dear Students,

I would like to bring to your attention the TED talks, a rather innovative  tool of sharing knowledge. You will find a TED talks of some interesting talks under the Interesting Psych Links (Resources). I will keep on updating the list as we go along. Also, if you find something that is not on the list and you have seen it on TED talks, please let me know and I will put it up there. Finally, I would like it to be an interactive project and so please keep on coming up with your suggestions on what to watch and share.

Be well,

zasj

Psychology Class

Dear students,

How to use the site?

I would like you to use this site as your Psychology Resource. You can find any information that is related and relevant to our psychology class here. For example, under the heading “pages” you will find Study Notes, which are as useful to your revision, as it is to the AP Psych class. Equally, under “study resources” you will find a plethora of materials that can aid your study.

Under the “AP Psych & Other Psych Resources” you will find especially useful resource, to which I would like you to pay attention in particular. It is the Introductory Psychology section, contributed by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) website. This superb site will help you while reviewing your own learning so far.

So, when we have an exam in a couple of weeks, you will know where to get the importnat information from for your revision, apart from your textbook.

Your Google Sites

I would like you to understand that by developing your own sites you contribute greatly to our class’ learning, by which means you will enable your fellow students to learn about Psychology in more interactive way. Thus making their work more fun!

Note: as advertised last week, I will be grading your sites this week. This is a great opportunity to earn extra points 😉

Posting your comments on your fellow’s site

You need to invite others to your sites and vice versa. Monica, very assertively indeed, has reminded me last week, that this is a two way process e.g. if you want to communicate with a chosen person, not only that you need to invite them first by using their e-mail (gmail), but you will also need to wait for them to invite you as well in return. In other words, make sure that you know each and everybody’s e-mail account, so that you can not only invite the whole class to your site, byt also that others can ivite you to theirs as well. This is a great opportunity to communicate with each other.

jeopardy!

Dear Students,

I thought that we can use the format of jeopardy as our final brief review before the AP Psych Exam next week, 12th May, 2009, starting @ 12noon.

You will find two power-points with some key terms etc. under this post.

Also, please post your ppts on your sites by tomorrow midnight, so that everyone can see them and revise over the weekend!

This ought to help you with your final revision.

Have fun & good luck 😉

P.S.:

… planning for next week

Students,

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, as it were. Here is the recap of what we have discussed in our last session re Emotion, Stress & Health.

1) I have the AP Psych Exam prep book for Jolio and Edward. You can colect it at the office. Alternatively, I will bring it for you next week.

2) Watch Slumdog Millionaire and look for a) what emotions you can detect in the film, and b) what kind of emotions the different scenes in the film generate in you. Please make sure you post your notes on your site! and that you have reviewed the relevant chapters prior watching the film.

3) Albert will finish his presentation, followed by Stefan with his work. Please make sure you speak for no more than 5 to 7min each. Thank you.

4) I have given you two summaries of articles, such as “Your personality could affect the age you live to,” and “A personality test cannot be faked.” Also, you have had two journal articles, they are: “Use of complementary medicine …,” and “The Relationship Between Student Psychological Wellbeing … .” Please read them and take notes. Make sure that you post your notes on your site. We will use this for our Socratic Seminar.

5) I have given you hand-outs and the roles you will take on re our Soc. Sem.

6) Please think about your Student Surveys and review your questions thus far from your google sites. I have some hand outs for you today. For those of you who are not here, you can collect them on Monday next week, before our AP class on Tuesday.

7) If time permits, I would like to speak with you individually about your presentations. Please have some questions you can ask.

8) This is for our AP Exam review. These are the names and chapters from the AP Exam prep book. It is due the week starting 3rd May 09. As I said, I would like to use some extra time for this. I will keep you posted. So, here it is:

14. Soc. Psy. – Erica

13. Disorders – Ching

12. Abnormal – Jolio

11. Testing – Brian

10. Personality – Alex

9. Dev. – Albert

8. Mot. & Em. – Edward

7. Cog. – Stefan

I would like you to look for the key terms/concepts and the big ideas. Please make it short but sweet! I would like you to get the main points and speak for no more than 5-7min about your chapter. Again, please make sure you post your work on your site.

9) Final point, I will bring a case study for you, and so please make sure that you are familiar with your “PAS Social Services” roles. This is what we have agreed on:

Albert – Counselor

Ching – Clin. Psych.

Brian – Soc. Worker

Alex – Mental Health W.

Stefan – Academic Psych.

Jolio – Support Worker

Edward – Community Nurse

Erica – Team Manager

That is all 😉

Have fun!

studying for the exam

Students,

It appears that the link to “Notepad” no longer exists. If you, however, have an excellent on-line resource that you find useful and use often, please do share it with the rest of us.

Bellow, you will find FAQ regarding the AP Exam. The quote is directly from the College Board people, and thus ought to be correct 😉

Best,

FAQ

Will I lose points if I answer a multiple-choice question wrong? Should I guess?

The answer to the first question is “yes,” but not as much as you might think. Your score on the multiple-choice section is based on the number of questions you answer correctly minus a fraction of the number of questions you answer incorrectly. (One-fourth of a point is subtracted for a wrong answer in questions with five answer choices, and one-third of a point in questions with four answer choices.) The answer to the second question is a conditional “yes.” Random guessing is unlikely to raise or lower your grade if you are unsure about the answer to a question, because of the formula (described above) used to deduct points for wrong answers. However, if you have SOME knowledge of the question, and can eliminate one or more answer choices, informed guessing from among the remaining choices is usually to your advantage.
